Peter KermondWhen HHS crew launched its first shell in the fall of 1997, Peter was the team’s first coach.  With the exception of a few years in the early 2000s, he has continued in that role, coaching girls, boys, novices and varsity.  He has been the boys’ varsity head coach since 2004.

Peter brings to the team a depth of competitive experience and infectious love of the sport that inspires the athletes who row for him.  Peter’s 35+ year career in crew began in high school at Belmont Hill, where he was a four-year member of the team, winning several medals at the NEIRAs and captaining the gold medal winning NEIRA Boys 1st Varsity four his senior year.  Peter spent the next four years on the University of Pennsylvania men’s heavyweight crew, where he was captain his senior year and competed in the 1980 Henley Thames Cup.  Following Penn, Peter rowed for over seven years on the U.S. Men’s Lightweight National Team, winning a silver medal at the World Championships in Belgium in 1985 and gold in the Wyfold cup at Henley.  Peter has competed and medaled nationally and internationally at Nationals, Canadian Henley, the Henley Royal Regatta, the Pan Am Games, and the World Championships. Unable to completely retire, Peter switched to sculling and has continued to compete successfully in both sweeps and sculls, most recently winning two gold medals in the 2009 Head of the Charles in the Men’s Senior Masters Doubles and in the Director’s Challenged Mixed Quad.

Peter is a founding board member and officer of the Friends of Hanover Crew.  In his daytime hours, Peter is the owner of Burnham Boat Slings, manufacturing custom made rowing products including boat covers, slings, and cartop rack systems.
